The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is a well written YA novel that will open your heart and break it. This semiautobiographical story is about Junior, a 14 year old growing up on a reservation near Spokane, Washington, who wants more. After a teacher recognizes the fire inside this often picked on kid, Junior transfers to the rural school twenty-two miles and a whole other world away. The only other Indian there is the school mascot. Junior straddles both worlds until he plays basketball for his new school against his old school. I read this short book (with illustrations) in one sitting and I'm still thinking about how good it is. 61/100
